Palm Springs Golf

Palm Springs is one the golf centers of the world. Here you will find five of the top 30 courses in California as rated by Golf.com. Wether you are seasoned golf professional or begining enthusiast, you will find large number and variety of golf courses to fit any taste. Palm Springs offers almost unmatched number of choices and vareity, and hence more attrace fees and amenities. Below is a guide of Palm Springs and Surrounding Desert Cities Golf courses

PGA West

The PGA West houses six top-rated golfing venues, including three that are consistently rated by Golf magazine as among the best courses to play in the nation. PGA West’s most famous course, the Stadium, is an 18-hole, par-72 field designed by world-renowned golf designer Peter Dye. Golf Digest magazine rated it in 2007 as the fourth toughest course in the United States. The Stadium’s signature hole is the 16th, which includes a 19-foot deep bunker that runs almost the full length of the hole.

La Quinta Resort

La Quinta’s venues are independent and stand on their own as top-rated courses for the area. In 2010, Golf.com ranked La Quinta’s Mountain course at the 70th course to play out of the top 100 courses in the nation. The Mountain course is a 6,700 yard, par-72 field that boasts some of the trickiest holes in the game, such as the par-5, fourth hole where at the tee, the green is hidden from view by a mountain that you have to play around to get to the hole.

Indian Wells Golf Resort

In 2010, both courses at Indian Wells Golf Resort were not only ranked among the top 20 courses to play in California by Golf Magazine, but they also ranked among the top municipal courses in the country by Golfweek, making Indian Wells the only Palm Springs golf course to have both its courses so highly rated. The higher rated of the two courses is the Players Course, which is an 18-hole, 7,300 yard, par-72 venue that has hosted such tournaments as the 2008 LG Skins Game.

Desert Willow Golf Resort

Awarded 4.5 stars by Golf Digest magazine, Desert Willow is another multicourse facility that offers a top-rated golfing experience. The Mountain View course is a 6,900 yard, par-72 classic California venue with long, uneven fairways that integrate indigenous California flora and fauna into the field of play. The more challenging Firecliff course, while a bit longer in total yardage, is a much more difficult play with more than 50 bunker and hazard areas, and tough shots such as the par-3, 14th hole that requires precision placement from the tee to a sunken green with bunkers on two sides.

Shadow Ridge Golf Resort

Unlike other Palm Springs courses, the Shadow Ridge, which was designed by championship golfer Nick Faldo, does not try to incorporate the desert terrain into the field of play. The course at Shadow Ridge boasts lush fairways and greens bordered by more than 2,000 trees and shrubs. The course itself is an 18-hole, 6,900 yard, par-71 venue formed in a sideways, lazy figure-8 design. In 2010, Shadow Ridge was chosen by Golf Magazine as one of the top 30 places to play in California.

Longest Course Nearest Palm Springs

The Escena Golf Club, located less than 10 miles from Palm Springs, offers a challenge to golfers looking to measure their driving prowess. This 18-hole course designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus covers a distance if 7,211 yards with a par of 72. The course features thousands of palm trees, sloping fairways, and water and sand hazards throughout. Golfers will also find four holes measuring more than 500 yards, including the monstrous No. 1, which measures 611 yards from the championship tees.

Resort Golfing in Palm Springs

The Palm Springs region offers a variety of resorts featuring golf courses. The nearest resort golfing to Palm Springs is the 18-hole Legends courses located at the Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort. The course offers vistas of snow-capped mountains, wide open fairways and stands of palm trees guarding large greens. Putting on the greens, however, represent a major challenge, as they are severely sloped. This par-71 course measures 6,775 yards and features an open, desert “links” style, conducive to walking as well as riding.

Easiest Courses to Walk

In Palm Springs, players can find several courses within 20 miles that are pleasant to walk. The nearest course is the nine-hole Bel Air Greens course. This Tommy Jacobs’ designed course at Bel Air Greens in Palm Springs measures 1,675 yards and is a par-32. The course is extremely flat, great for walking, and features its share of sand bunkers.

The Cathedral Canyon Golf Club also offers nine-hole golf courses measuring just more than 3,000 yards each, or golfers can play all 18 holes. The course presents a flat lay-out and features water hazards on over half of the holes in each nine-hole layout.

The first and only Gary Player course in the desert, the Mission Hills North Course is designed for golfers of all levels and preserves and enhances the natural beauty of the desert environment. The

course features 20 acres of lakes, four waterfalls and beautiful landscaping.

The Mission Hills North Course has proved to be a popular one with both public and resort golfers. It is used as an alternative to the Pete Dye Course and is generally easier for the average golfer to play. Player’s design makes extensive use of water, with lakes coming into play on 10 holes. On the par-5 11th, water is reachable on all three shots before reaching the green. Three of the course’s par-4s – the fifth, eighth and 12th – all feature water in some way. The 11th is the toughest of the par-5s, though a golfer must also be careful on the third hole – which also has a lake in the fairway – and the 17th, with a lake near the green. Both nines end with demanding par-4s with water. The 18th requires a good drive over a lake to a fairway that doglegs to the right.

You’ll find everything you need for your round at the award-winning golf and tennis professional shops. 760-862-4551

Some of you may know that in December 2010, Southern California (and many other areas) experienced a very large rain storm. This impacted our golf course in a way we couldn’t even imagine.

After about a week of rain we had a raging river running through the Rancho Las Palmas Country Club wash.

After the water receded, we were left with MUD, about 25 acres of it and in some areas it was as much as six feet deep!

So we did our homework and brought in Southwest Landscape, based in Huntington Beach, to clean it up and re-build the holes that go through the wash to the tune of $500,000 (yes, that is correct number of zeros).

We decided to take this opportunity to make some improvements and add some yardage to make the course more challenging. Approximately 10 acres of sod was laid and 20 additional acres have been re-seeded. During re-construction, five new tee boxes were added to the North Course, adding approximately 150 yards in additional length. This summer, we will add another 100 yards to the North Course. The North/South 18-hole rotation now plays over 6,400 yards compared to under 6,100 last spring!

And here is the result! The beautiful new North 5 Fairway!

So today’s lesson: When life gives you rain and mud, make tee boxes!

Palm Desert Public Golf Courses

Woodhaven Country Club

Address: 41555 Woodhaven Drive East, Palm Desert, Ca 92211

Phone: (760)345-7636

Directions: Heading east on the I-10 freeway, exit Washington. Turn right to head South on Washington. Location on the right.

The 18-hole “Woodhaven” course at the Woodhaven Country Club facility in Palm Desert, California features 5,794 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70 . The course rating is 67.1 and it has a slope rating of 118 on Bermuda grass. Designed by Harold Heers Jr., the Woodhaven golf course opened in 1984.

Woodhaven is a private country club that is considered one of the best hidden gems of the desert. The golf course was designed with gentle rolling slopes, narrow fairways, with spectacular mountain views throughout the 18 holes.

You can get off to an easy start here on No. 1, a par-4, playing at 361 yards from the back and 341 from the front. This hole offers a straight-forward layout, but watch out for the bunkers to the left and right as well as around the green. The 5th hole is an interesting and short par-4, measuring 263 yards from the back and 244 from the front. The narrow fairway may look tempting, but be careful. “A lot of big hitters would like to drive this hole,” said Rick Reed, Woodhaven’s director of golf, “but it has large trees on the left and a long lake on the right. So it’s easy to push your ball into the water or pull it into the trees.”

Our signature hole is the photogenic No. 6, a par-3, measuring 165 yards from the back and 118 yards from the forward tees, that is all carry over water. “It’s a beautiful hole with a big fountain in the middle of a pond,” said Reed. “Sometimes the water can obscure your view of the pin.” The 17th also offers possible water trouble. It’s one of the two par-5s on the course and plays at 500 yards from the back and 460 yards from the front. Accuracy is important here. “You need to stay in the middle of the fairway,” Reed said. “It’s easy to go left into the water. But it’s also possible to reach the green in two, but you’ll have to go over the water on your second shot.”

The view from the 7th tee box is considered one of the best in the valley, from there you have a complete panoramic view from one end of the Coachella Valley to the other.

The North Course measures 7,060 yards (Rating 73.7 / slope 137) from the championship tees, but with 4 sets of tees to play from players of all skill levels can find their game.
